BBB of the Mid-South is warning consumers to be wary of door-to-door magazine sales companies making emotional pitches but failing to deliver any magazines. The sales pitches vary, but often include that the salesperson is working to further his education or earn points toward winning a college scholarship or a trip. In other cases, the pitch plays upon consumers’ patriotism, with the salesperson showing a military ID or stating that he or she was formerly in the military.

A consumer recently contacted us to help determine if a call she received was a scam. The caller offered to send her new Medicare cards, including one that offered extra benefits, then asked for the name of her bank. The consumer wisely hung up and contacted us.
It’s a scam that some seniors fall for. The crooks claim to represent Medicare or another government agency and ask consumers to update information in order to receive their Medicare cards or benefits. If the crooks can get banking information, they’ll use it to commit identity theft.

I went on Google to find out what the most common resolutions were and found many listings.

What would you think if you received a letter with this language on the envelope – “Warning: $2,000 Fine For Any Person Interfering or Obstructing With Delivery Of This Letter. U.S. Mail TTT.18 U.S. Code”?
Is it possible the sender wants you to think it’s some sort of official mailing from the government that you need to open immediately? Additional language on the envelope says that time sensitive material is enclosed and requests a response within five days. In this column, I’ll offer advice on two topics – these kinds of mailings and a troublesome industry that makes use of them.
