Scam artists and unethical companies succeed because they appeal to the needs and aspirations of their victims. This is the time of year that people make resolutions to improve their lives, and I wondered if there was any correlation between the most common New Year's resolutions and the most common scams.
I went on Google to find out what the most common resolutions were and found many listings.

Every year, more people head online rather than to the mall to get their holiday shopping done. Cyber Monday, the Monday after Thanksgiving, has officially replaced Black Friday as the most popular day to shop for the holidays. Shopping online means avoiding the crowds, but it also opens up the buyer to attacks from scammers and hackers.
“You can’t beat shopping online for convenience, comfort and comparing prices,” said Randy Hutchinson, BBB president. “But don’t let your guard down. Take the necessary precautions to avoid fraudulent websites, scammers and other ‘Grinches’ who would just love to ruin your holidays.”

Would you like to buy a 2009 Mini-Cooper worth more than $20,000 for just $10,300? My guess is that many of you would jump at the chance to get such a great deal.
Would you wire $5,000 as a down payment to an auto dealer you found on the Internet to hold the Mini-Cooper, with the balance to be paid when it's delivered or you pick it up? My hope is that most of you would know better. But not everyone does.
The FBI issued an alert in August about online auto scams. From 2008 to 2010, the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center received nearly 14,000 complaints from consumers who were victimized or at least targeted by these scams. Total dollar losses were nearly $44.5 million.

Know who you're dealing with. Use anti-virus and anti-spyware software, as well as a firewall, and update them all regularly. Be sure to set up your operating system and Web browser software properly, and update them regularly.

Whether playing, shopping, studying or just surfing, today's kids are taking advantage of all that the web has to offer. But when it comes to their personal information, who's in charge? The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, enforced by the Federal Trade Commission, requires commercial website operators to get parental consent before collecting any personal information from kids under 13. COPPA allows teachers to act on behalf of a parent during school activities online, but does not require them to do so. That is, the law does not require teachers to make decisions about the collection of their students' personal information. Check to see whether your school district has a policy about disclosing student information.

shopping online—are soaring, fraud and deception may dampen consumer confidence in the e-marketplace. But cyberspace is not without boundaries, and fraud and deception are unlawful no matter what the medium. The FTC has enforced and will continue enforcing its consumer protection laws online to ensure that products and services are described truthfully in online ads and that consumers get what they pay for. These activities benefit consumers as well as sellers, who expect and deserve a fair marketplace.
