How to Register for State and Federal Do-Not-Call Registries

What is the Federal Do-Not-Call list?

  • Its purpose is to cut down on unwelcome telemarketing calls.
  • It became effective in October 2003.
  • Registration does not expire.
  • Telemarketers must buy an updated list every 3 months.
  • If you get a call that you think is prohibited, report it to the Federal Trade Commission.

Are some organizations exempt from using the Do-Not-Call list?

  • Political organizations.
  • Charities, although professional fundraisers must remove your name from the list if you ask.
  • Marketing surveys, although beware of sales calls disguised as surveys. This is a common scam used to get around the do-not-call lists.
  • Businesses with whom you have had a relationship within the past 18 months. You can ask them to stop calling.
  • Businesses that you have asked for information from, or applied to, in the past 3 months. You can ask them to stop calling.

Does Tennessee have a Do-Not-Call list also?

  • Yes, and it has fewer exemptions than the Federal list.
  • It is not shared with the Federal list so you should register with both.

How do you register?

Can a person add a cell phone number to the same “do-not-call list” used for regular phones?

  • Yes, and probably should do so to have the best chance of eliminating all unwelcome calls.
