November 29, 2012 – Memphis, TN – The BBB of the Mid-South is issuing a consumer alert about All Around Movers, a moving company located in Memphis TN. The BBB has processed 24 complaints against the company in the last 3 years. All Around Movers failed to respond to 8 of them and another 13 remain unresolved. All Around Movers has earned an F rating with the BBB.
According to BBB complaints, the company has used several different names including: Mario’s Moving Company, All Around Movers, All Around Professional Movers, All Around Town Movers, Professional Moving Service, Two Expert Movers and Two Professional Movers.
Complaints to the BBB allege that the company doesn’t honor their quoted price, oftentimes charging customers more than what was agreed upon. Some consumers told the BBB that they incurred additional charges for trucks, mileage, insurance, and large or heavy furniture. Others complained that they were quoted a flat rate only to find out on the day of the move that there was a minimum charge of 4 hours. Additional complaints about the company’s service included not arriving at the agreed upon time, not repairing items that were damaged in the move, and not responding to calls from customers.
“Moving can be a stressful time,” said Randy Hutchinson, BBB of the Mid-South president. “Dealing with a less-than-reputable mover can not only increase the stress level but leave you with damaged belongings and costs you didn’t anticipate. Homeowners planning a move should do their due diligence before selecting a mover to entrust their belongings to. It only takes a moment to check a company’s record with the BBB and it doesn’t cost a thing.”
A Germantown woman told the BBB that she was quoted $65 per hour with no hourly minimum and given a start time of 9:00am. When the movers finally arrived 2 hours late, they asked her to sign a blank contract that stated there was a four hour minimum. “I had specifically been told there was not one,” she said.
A Memphis man told the BBB that the company damaged several of his items. “I have not had any help in resolving the matter,” he said. “They claimed on several occasions that they were coming over to address my complaints and nothing has been done.”
A Cordova woman complained that the company damaged her bedroom furniture and has not responded to her requests for repair. “I left several messages and never received any response. I have been trying to get my furniture repaired for over two months,” she said.
Another frustrated consumer said, “It’s the worst moving company I’ve ever dealt with in my 22 years of military service!”
The BBB offers the following tips for making your move a smooth and successful one:
· Start planning your move at least six to eight weeks before your targeted moving date.
· Check out any mover’s record with the BBB. Find out how long the company has been in business, how they’ve responded to complaints, and their grade.
· If you don’t have a particular mover in mind, the BBB can give you a list of BBB Accredited Businesses in this industry – businesses who have pledged to treat you fairly.
· Obtain several estimates. Be sure you’re comparing apples to apples. Keep in mind that the lowest bid may not necessarily be the best.
· Always get the estimate in writing. Carefully read and understand the contract before signing. Make sure the contract specifies the dates and times of your move. Don’t sign any contract with sections left blank.
· Pay as little as possible upfront and never the full amount. Pay with a credit card if you can so you’ll have some recourse if the mover doesn’t fulfill its obligations. Be wary of a mover who demands payment in full and in cash before they’ll start loading.
· Make sure you understand how much insurance the mover has and what it covers. Ask them to provide you with the insurance company’s name and policy number. You may need to purchase extra insurance to protect your possessions.
· Be sure to ask your mover if they will be handling your goods for the entire move or whether they’re contracting it out to someone else.
· Make an inventory of the goods to be moved. Have a responsible person present at both ends of the move to observe the loading and unloading.
· If damage or loss occurs, have the driver make a special note on the inventory and/or delivery receipt. Then promptly notify the company in writing, keeping a copy for your own files.
· You may want to pack some of your belongings yourself to save on packing charges. Understand, however, that the mover may not accept liability for damage to items you packed.
