BBB of the Mid-South is warning consumers to be wary of door-to-door magazine sales companies making emotional pitches but failing to deliver any magazines. The sales pitches vary, but often include that the salesperson is working to further his education or earn points toward winning a college scholarship or a trip. In other cases, the pitch plays upon consumers’ patriotism, with the salesperson showing a military ID or stating that he or she was formerly in the military.

The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers about a new mystery shopping scam that is using the name of the Memphis research firm in an attempt to defraud the public. Axiom Research LLC in Memphis TN has been the victim of business identity theft. Their company’s name is being used to convince folks that an offer to be a mystery shopper – accompanied by a phony check – is legitimate.

Memphis TN, February 7, 2012 – The BBB is issuing a consumer alert about Mo Money Taxes, a tax preparation company headquartered in Memphis. Mo Money Taxes has had an F rating with the BBB in Memphis for several years for failure to respond to consumer complaints.
The BBB of the Mid-South has received 24 complaints on Mo Money Taxes in the past three years; 6 of those remain unanswered. Another 8 complaints that were recently filed are pending.

The BBB is warning holiday travelers to beware of a telephone phishing scam designed to steal credit card numbers.

An email scam using BBB's name and logo continues to proliferate. Most of the emails containe the subject line “Complaint from your customers" and have a link or attachment containing phishing malware that steals information.
